eco_zone 112-5850

eco zone 112-5850 focuses on the sound of a malfunctioning air conditioner. Field recordings of this unit were made at Vienna's Nordwest-Bahnhof, and its spectral temporal progression was revealed through frequency analysis. The individual frequencies were then re-synthesized using the SuperCollider programming language and overlaid with the original material. This allows for a layering of overtones, which can create what is known as psychoacoustic beatings in listeners – pulsating tones in different pitches that are not physically present but exist only in auditory perception: the objective-physical acoustics and the perception of the listeners drift apart.

The listening experience is thus understood as a feedback effect of a faulty system, which is intended to investigate our own role and psychological positioning within such systems.
